Abarth 124 / Replacement battery?
« on: October 24, 2021, 11:14:12 AM »
The battery has died in my 66 plate spider.  Any suggestions for a good replacement that will fit all the connections, hold down clamps etc. to keep as close to stock as possible?  Can't actually tell what make the original is without removing it, I think.

Abarth 124 / Unhappy Abarth
« on: July 24, 2020, 01:47:43 PM »
Just tried to start my Spider for the first time since mid-March.  Didn't want to know - engine turned about twice, paused, then cranked continuously for about 10sec and stopped.  Three or four goes elicited the same response.  Stuck the Ctek charger on it, only 3 bars...  Gave it 24hrs then tried again.  This time the cranking was continuous, but still no start, tried three times.  Then did the usual computer thing of locking the car and unlocking it again - tried the starter button and this time it fired, very unevenly.  It was really lumpy for about 15-20sec, then began to clear.   Gave it a 15-mile run and it seems back to normal.
I guess it's all this horrible electronics, with drains going on all over the place taxing the battery.  The little Cooper S sits next to it and hasn't been run since last October.  Jumped in, pulled the choke out, three churns and up she fires, smooth as ever.  Progress?  I think not.

Abarth 124 / Parking sensors
« on: February 25, 2020, 08:42:20 AM »
Anyone know if you can retrofit rear parking sensors to a 124 Spider?
My wife will be driving the car more in future but would like these installed as she's used to them in her old car.  I'll give the dealer a ring, just wondered if anyone had experience and/or knowledge.

Abarth 124 / Has anyone replaced a windscreen yet?

Mine's just gone, and there are horror stories on the 'net about broken trim pieces and huge bills.  Is it best to go to the dealer, or rely on Autoglass?

Abarth 124 / Differential or transmission noise?
« on: September 09, 2019, 10:55:26 PM »
I've now done about 11,000 miles in the 124, having got back from a tour of Germany, Austria, Italy and France this morning.  The car has behaved brilliantly, again, this being the third continental trip we've done in it in 2.5 years.  Being able to throw the hood up and down in seconds is brilliant, and even the fuel consumption's been good at around 40mpg.  Only downside is boot space for my wife's packing....
However, on a long (350-mile) bit of German motorway a few days back with the hood up, I became aware of a faint transmission whine that appeared at around 72-3 mph and stayed up to around 80.  As it is linked to road speed and is present with light to hard throttle pressure, but goes the instant the loud pedal is released, I'd say it was differential noise.  It's a faint, fairly high-pitched whine which is (obviously) more noticeable with the hood up.
Has anyone else had this, or does anyone know of a reported issue with the LSD unit?  Not sure if it's the same as the ND Mazdas or not.  I need to decide whether it's normal or not (it's not very loud at all - yet) as my warranty will be up in November.  I'll probably take it to the dealer next week, but I suspect they won't be able to hear it easily.  Any thoughts gratefully listened to!

Abarth 124 / Driving in Europe
« on: May 13, 2018, 05:08:55 PM »
I’m off to Italy this week in the car - does anyone know if the standard projector headlamps can be ‘flipped’ for driving on the right, or do I have to stick those horrible plastic things over the lenses?

Abarth 124 / Service intervals?
« on: October 09, 2017, 09:12:56 AM »
Coming up to a year since delivery now, and just wondering what others have done re: servicing.  I've had no communication from the supplying dealer, and the car's not telling me anything about servicing - I've only done around 3,500 miles so probably not due.  I did an oil change myself at 1,500 (engine only) using oil and filter from the dealer, but didn't do an oil analysis.  Be interested to know what others have done.

Abarth 124 / Motorsport
« on: September 11, 2017, 08:35:37 AM »
Good review by Andrew Frankel in this month's Motorsport - on balance, he likes it, thinking the engine/chassis tuning balance is the best combination for the Mazda/Fiat/Abarth platform.  I think the review is worthy of note as he routinely drives some serious kit.  As usual he criticizes the price, but that just adds to its future exclusivity!

Abarth 124 / Security indicator light
« on: September 01, 2017, 04:31:57 PM »
I hope this is a silly question, but I can't find the answer in the manual.
Today I noticed that when sitting in the car with the engine off I am getting a flashing red light in the tacho dial which depicts a car with a closed padlock.  I have never noticed this before, and the only reference I can find in the manual says that if this light is on the security system needs looking at.
I can't believe it's normal and I simply haven't noticed it before, but then again it seems to be the only light flashing when the engine is switched off, so is it just a flashing security light to warn that the car is alarmed?  Oddly it flashes all the time, even when the car is unlocked.  The only time it stays off is when the engine is running.  I noticed on start up, there is also a brief appearance of a light showing the bonnet in crash position, but blink and you miss it.
Normal but paranoid, or dealer advice needed?

Roger

edit - think I've found the answer - it's normal.  Different section of the manual states that this light flashes all the time the engine is switched off.

Abarth 124 / Headlamp dip
« on: August 04, 2017, 11:56:49 PM »
Long shot, but I don't suppose anyone knows if the headlamps can be switched for driving on the right?
I'm about to do a European tour and I really hate the bits of plastic on the lens.  On my old cars I slap in a pair of LHD headlamps, but I'm not buying a pair for this - hate to think what they'd cost.  My ancient E30 325i could be switched over by a simple lever behind the headlamps, but that's unlikely to be possible on a modern as it misses an income opportunity for the manufacturer.  Any chance?

Abarth 124 / Stone chips
« on: April 29, 2017, 10:30:27 AM »
Managed to get my first stone chip in the matt black wrap on the bonnet yesterday.  It's perforated the vinyl - anyone know the best way to treat this?  Tiny blob of touch-up, like I do on the paintwork?

Abarth 124 / Ticking noise?
« on: April 23, 2017, 10:01:45 PM »
My car's now done 2k miles since It was delivered in December. The last 3-4 times I've started it up it's made a distinct ticking noise with engine speed which I'm sure wasn't there  before. Is this likely to be normal, or do I need to get it looked at? Seems to drive OK.

Abarth 124 / Top Gear
« on: March 21, 2017, 02:40:18 PM »
Well, the idiots on Top Gear clearly didn't get it!  I guess they've got too used to 600 brake Mercs and Astons to appreciate small, lightweight quality.

Went to the GRRC Members' Meeting on Sunday, parked my red one a few cars away from a white one, also with a private plate.  Should have got them together!
Good day's racing, a bit cold, but my Cobra mate was well and truly beaten by a TVR.  Another was running the Ecurie Ecosse Lister Jag in the AS-B trophy, did OK.

Abarth 124 / Oil change?
« on: January 06, 2017, 11:08:26 PM »
I like to do an early oil change in new engines - but the sites I usually buy from don't have any info regarding the 1.4 multi-air, as far as I can tell.  What oil do these take, and any ideas what filter?  5W40 full synthetic?

Abarth 124 / Cleaning and protecting vinyl wrap
« on: January 06, 2017, 09:51:15 PM »
Anybody got any tips for looking after the matte black vinyl wrap on the 124?
Consensus seems to be not to use any wax or polish on the vinyl parts, but what detergent do folks use?  And anything to protect it?
