What's that little pocket . . . . .

This might sound pathetic - but I haven't really even sat in the car since I bought it. Last night I was looking for the OBD port (still not found it) and sat in the passenger side.
What is that weird little spring loaded pocket on the side of the transmission tunnel?

It's for a single cupholder

If you buy the cupholders (surprisingly expensive!), you will get a pair that clip into the sockets behind the arm rest.  The passenger one can be popped out of here and fitted into the socket you've discovered.  We usually leave them in the rear fixing as the trans tunnel side of the footwell is where my wife keeps the maps (we have no satnav and hate using them).
