Road tar in the wheel arch
« on: April 16, 2016, 03:26:25 PM »
Hi Guys

We have been having terrible problems with the road surfaces here in East Lancs, mine and many other cars getting coated in tar spots.

The contractor used to resurface the road last Autumn is being made to return and do it again during this Spring / Summer. They have offered to valet any cars affected, at the moment I am refusing this as we had our car Professionally detailed when new in October and I want it returning to it's correct state.

I fear I may have difficulty getting them to cough up the £350 it coast though.

I have managed to clean the tar spots of the body panels with GTechniq tar remover, but noticed, when swapping the winter wheels off that the wheel arch lining is caked in the stuff, the springs look like they are growing crystals in a science lab!

My question is, will this cause problems with the springs?

Will it be easy to clean off? How? With what?

I am loathe to use too much of the tar remover and in particular on plastic parts (also goes for the rear diffuser), but it does need cleaning.

A pic attached showing the body work whilst the tar remover was working.

Andy

That is really quite bad!! >:(

I wouldn't have any concerns about using tar remover on plastic, I can't think of any other way to get rid of it.

Bloody hell thats a lot of tar!

Any tar remover works fine on the wheel arch linings, I cleaned all of mine off using it

If you've got that much tar on the sides I'd hate to think how much is on the arch liners. Might be worth trying to track down your local autosmart supplier and getting a 5ltr can or tardis. It will work out cheaper than the GTechniq products.

Thanks for the replies and yes it was a lot of tar, every panel bar the roof and bonnet the same!

Will look into Tardis, thanks for the help.

Still going to put in a claim to the road contractor though, they initially said "no" to my claim of £350 on the phone but softening a little to " will refer up line" when I pointed out I had been keeping my MP informed along the way.

Cheers
