Abarth MX-5
« on: February 03, 2015, 09:21:58 AM »
Just read in this months Top Gear Magazine that officially the new MX-5 won't be an Alfa but an Abarth.

What do you all think? And what design modifications do you think or like Abarth to carry out?

Officially confirmed?

Certainly seen plenty of speculation and assumption, hope all this is true. Seen quite a few artist impressions of it but basically just the MX-5 with some 500 feature lol. Expect 180+ bhp and obvs rear wheel drive, the 1.4l engine in it.

I can't wait for it to be released or even some proepr images of it released, Fiat/Abarth are really taking there time over this one, have been seeing images of the MX-5 for the last 6+ months, give us something please Fiat!!!  ;D

It was under the Heroes and Zeros section of Planet Top Gear. So fingers crossed they haven't lied.

Hopefully they will use the Fiat 1.4 Engine. Mazda's obsession with naturally aspirated engines is only going to be getting 130bhp out of their 1.5. What wouldn't be too bad is if Sabelt seats came as standard, can only dream  ::)

I'm the same, been reading about this for ages and want some solid proof with a photo that its going to happen.

Well I think its a cert, just not sure if its going to be an abarth or fiat barchetta... I hope they have it as a stand alone abarth. Yeah i like the new mx5 but the front end is hideous along with the wheels and is really lacking in power. If abarth is indeed the maker which is likely according to all the claims and also there 5 year marketing plan listed a speciality model.... it will certainly have plenty of aesthetic changes to set it apart from the mazda. If its nice, around 6s mark to 60 i will be on the waiting list and specing up a brand new one lol. Sabelts will probs be an optional extra

Could be both like with all the other cars, Fiat being the standard model with Abarth as the range topper.

Glad I'm not the only one that though the front looks strange. The headlights just look to small, if they where slightly bigger it wouldn't look so bad. Hopefully they will let their Italian flare go wild and produce something crazy like they did with the 1500 Biposto.

I can't see the italians just tinkering with it a little, they do things there own way lol. Expected the interior to be largely unchanged, maby nice seats with the abarth stitching and different dials etc. Yeah, the lights are, funny shape as well but apart from that nice car, slightly lacking in sportiness though, the body kit on it is so bland, no diffuser or anything...  :o

I have a funny feeling that Mazda have played it safe by sticking close to the previous design through fear of loosing sales.

The people in the know have already confirmed that it will be a Fiat 124 Spider

No confirmation of there being an Abarth version, also no confirmation of power.  It will use an existing power plant, most likely the 1.4 T-Jet (not Multiair)

Top Gear magazine seems to get their information second hand from AutoCar, which is completely made up ;)
Abarth Punto Supersport
Grigio Campovolo, Skydome, Assetto Koni, Floating brakes
Summer: Gunmetal 18" Esseesse with Bridgestone Potenza RE050A
Winter: Official Abarth Winter Kit (17" with Pirelli Sottozero 210)

Noooo, Top Gear stealing information from Auto Car. That's blasphemy lol  ;D Well you never know Abarth might do a tuned up version of it in the future.

They are really playing their cards close to the chest. Every bit of information they release contradicts the last. At least the Geneva Motor Show is next month, maybe they will say something then?

A sporty two seater is a prime candidate for the Abarth treatment.... if they don't do this, they are complete and utter idiots as it's as good a chance as they will ever get to bring a proper Abarth to the market that goes back to the originals as little two seaters....

I think they will use the Multi-air engine.... makes more sense after all the money Fiat spent investing in it, why go with an inferior power plant thats outdated when they have a more powerful and effiecent equivalent? Again would be a stupid choice in the T-jet.

I hope there is an Abarth version, would love to tell people I have an Abarth Spider haha!  8)

Think my favorite is the second, only really the grill that changes, being touted for December 2014 for the Fiat 124 Spider... that would be the Fiat first so probaly won't get an Abarth version if it happens until mid 2016 earliest....  :'(

On a better note gives me plenty of time to pay off the Abarth punto esseesse I have just now and let me get a bigger deposit down on one of these babys!  8)
