I've just ordered an internal one...is it worth waiting  for it ?...or will it take too long ?

Highly unlikely you will ever receive the goods.

They must be so easy to steal

They are.
ODB port locks &/or diskloks are essential.

The change of the designation from 500 to 595 on the S3 was simply a marketing/branding thing.

No other changes until the S4 was released in 2015.

You will still  lose your 3 years parts & labour warranty if you use a tuning box.

Only if they know about it. I plan to remove it every time before service and MOT.

Doesn't make a jot of difference. The engine data is still logged so one look at this and it will be obvious a box has been used.
I know people who have had warranty invalidated through this.

1) Euro5 vs Euro 6 - Can the Euro6 engine be remapped to restore the emissions strangled low down power as well as the pops and bangs?
Yes but you'll need a better exhaust to get the soundtrack - the monza is cheap 2nd hand and does the job nicely.

2) Euro6 500s are about the same price as the first 595s - whats the difference other than 5bhp?!
Different software in the ECU.

3) Sounds like Blue&Me doesn't stream music , is there another solution?
Yes they have a USB socket - plug your device into there and the music is available through the system as well as full control from the steering wheel.

4) Is there an upgraded sound system, and does it sound half decent?
Yes it's called "Interscope" and isn't easily retrofitted so if you want it, find a car with it already fitted. That said the standard audio system isn't bad.

5) How well do 500s keep their value? from a quick look they seem to hold better than a Cooper S?
They take an initial hit in the first few years due to the really low PCP deals available which tempt people into a brand new one rather than buying a nearly new, but once they get past 4-5 years old the residuals are pretty firm.

You need three channels - high frequencies to the tweeters on the A panel, mid frequencies to the door speakers & low frequencies to the sub.

I'm not sure that aftermarket units ate compatible with the wiring though so you may have to rewire them all to the appropriate outputs from your new head unit.

Where is this valve actually located I want to check mine ?

At the top of the exhaust where it bolts onto the middle section.

So put it in a members-only forum.

Why not just post the details on this thread and then everyone can benefit?

Thanks I’ll take a look at that method tomorrow but I’m hoping to not have any cable showing if possible.

I don't have any cables showing. I routed the cable along the roof panel, down the A panel, behind the dash, along the floor under the centre console, and tapped it into the feed to the cig socket.

Why don't you just tap into the feeds behind the cig socket in the cabin? That's what I did - far easier.

The 595 is a car you buy because you HAVE to have one.
They're a hoot to drive but in all honesty, the reviews are correct.

The gearbox is slow and ponderous compared with modern dual-clutch boxes.
The suspension isn't great. It's not as hard as some would have you believe but when you've driven a really well-sorted great-handling car you realise how poor the cornering is on a 595 and how difficult it is to get the power down and usable.

The interior isn't bad, it's woeful. It's comparable with what other manufacturers were knocking out in in the 90s - all hard scratchy plastics - not a soft-touch surface in sight.  And while the driving position may work for some, for most it's uncomfortable at best and the pedal placement is terrible.

If YOU like the 595 (and most of us do or we wouldn't be here) then that's all that matters.

As a "fun" car it hits the mark. As a "drivers" car, it's well off it by modern standards.

« on: February 11, 2019, 09:57:48 AM »
I really like the MTA - it's a nice meaty shift and with a little practice makes it easy to get the exhaust popping and banging mid-shift. We have an MTA on our Turismo and our last one also was an MTA.

However, comparing with other brands, the MTA is pretty poor. Most brands now are using dual-clutch systems which make the single-clutch MTA feel ponderous and slow in comparison.
And then there's the reliability aspect - after about 4-5 years old, they go wrong. A lot. And when they do they're cripplingly expensive to fix. Meaning they're great while you're under warranty, but they're a huge risk afterwards...

Another name for the MTA is "Selespeed" (an Alfa Romeo term). Just google "Selespeed issues" and you'll very quickly see why they get such bad press....

We had a S3 Essesse running 175hp. We now have a S5 Turismo running 165hp.

Despite being down on power, I'd go for a brand new S5 over an older on every day of the week. Handling is much improved, build quality is much improved. The radio etc., is much improved.

You can feel the years of development that exists under the skin of the new models.
