Abarth Grande Punto / Re: AGP BUYERS GUIDE??
« on: April 06, 2016, 08:40:24 PM »
First thing to be aware of is the range to choose from, all cars left the factory as standard 155bhp. a lot were upgraded to 180bhp spec with the official dealer fitted esseesse kit and the service book should be stamped to confirm this. Much rarer are the Assetto kit cars, this consisted of the wheels, brakes and springs of the esseesse kit but with no engine mods, these cars remained at 155bhp.Again, the kit fitting should be recorded in the service book.
Beware of the little silver sticker in the drivers door surround, some say 155 bhp and some say 180bhp esseesse, these have NO bearing at all on what the car actually is, they were stuck on at random at the factory. the 180 stickers were all applied to 155 cars and many of the ones with 155 stickers are actually 180 cars. There are sellers who genuinely don't know this and others who will try and con you.

you get to choose from red, white or black exterior colours with cloth or leather seats. some cars have the optional Sabelt sport seats. All have air con but some have a more sophisticated climate control system. Glass roofs are optional too. Standard wheels were 17'' diamond cut with an optional black wheel in a different style. Assetto and esseesse kits came with 18'' wheels in either white or metallic grey.
lots of cars now have mix and matched specs with 18'' wheels on standard 155 cars and drilled discs on 155 cars
esseesse fitted cars should have had 6000 mile oil changes throughout their lives, all cars have a main service at 18000 intervals
hope this helps a bit

General Chat / 7 years old today
« on: January 16, 2016, 10:00:25 PM »

Today I'm celebrating 7 years of Abarth ownership.

The car still looks like new and drives perfectly. Passed my MOT with only little advisories on low rear pads and the exhaust showing a few signs of age.

Today was is my 8th visit to Blyth for the Little Northern Meet (before anyone asks, the car was 1 day old at the first one so its 7years old at the 8th one)

Various predictions about Fiat reliability have been proved wrong, the mild still exhaust is still there (maybe not for much longer), the gearbox has been totally fault free and the leather interior hasn't fallen apart. Even the red stripes are still firmly stuck to the car and unblemished.

I've gone ever so slightly over average mileage, 84500 on the clock today

I've met many people over the 7 years of ownership and have made some valued friends, thank you everyone

The car is getting gradually closer to being a classic.

Still more than happy with my choice of "new" car :thumb:

84000 mile oil and filter change and an MOT

2 advisories, rear pads getting low, to be expected as they,ve been on for 40000 miles and the exhaust is deteriorating after 8 and half years and 79000 miles

not bad at all I reckon

Taken my best white wheels off for the winter, last year i left a set on and the effects Of salt and grit were pretty obvious by the end of winter.
So, after a break of 19 months I'm running with  the original style 17 inch diamond cut wheels. The tyres should just about see me through to the spring even though two of them were on the car from new.
I think I'll put proper winter tyres on this set of wheels for the future

Abarth 500, 595 & 695 / Re: one use air ducting clamps
« on: November 08, 2015, 12:19:05 PM »
They're not one use clips, they are clic clips. You can get a special pair of pliers, about a tenner from halfords. Removing and replacing takes just a second.
Can be done with a screwdriver andd ordinary pliers but it  is a bit fidddly

Abarth Grande Punto / Electric window won't work
« on: October 15, 2015, 11:08:57 PM »
Had this with my Mk2 Punto and now its the same with my AGP

passenger side window won't budge, can hear clicking from the motor but no movement

basically, the motor has jammed, it just needs a wiggle to un jam it, the problem is getting access to wiggle the motor

you have to remove the door card, sooo, behind the interior door handle there is a little removable plate, needs a narrow flat screwdriver to remove and this reveals a bolt, remove this and two similar bolts hiding below the the door pull handle, not covered, just out of line of site

then, remove the screws along the bottom edge of the door card, the card is now held in place by clips, just pull the door card away from the door and the serated clips will let go

the door card will now swing away from the door, hinged along the top edge

undo the two wiring connectors to the window switch panel

pull the door card upwards by the door pull and the top seal will release

you need to tear the water proof/ sound proof membrane allowing the lock cable to pull clear and provide access to the inner workings of the door

the window motor is in there, not easy to see but you can feel the securing screws and just undoing these allows enough movement to to un jam the mechanism

try the window, it now works

tighten up the motor, tape up the torn membrane and fasten it all back together

job done, dealer costs avoided

had a look at LUKs website, they supply clutches to manufacturers for about a third of all new car production so it seems like its going to be a quality bit of kit

Abarth Grande Punto / Clutch slip...its time
« on: September 04, 2015, 10:20:51 PM »
Well.. my new car is nearing 80000 miles and I got a bit of clutch slip accelerating onto the A1 this week

first thoughts, better price a clutch, 240 quid for a new Abarth part, 200 for a recon unit, plus fitting.
Local garage , £250 to fit, if I provide the parts, including fitting flywheel which I might need

Abarth dealer £476 to fit new clutch including parts

at first sight it seems like a close call but then the Abarth parts department says you will probably need a release bearing as well and that's £267 for the part

local garage agrees and says you probably need flywheel {£348 at Abarth}, clutch and bearing

..soooo, yes you can just change the clutch but if you need a bearing or flywheel anytime soon you'll be taking it all apart again at 200 quid a shot plus parts

summary, approaching £1100 for all of this at Abarth, with 1 year parts warranty but e bay throws up an aftermarket clutch kit containing 2 part clutch, bearing and flywheel for £354 with 5 year warranty, local garage says its all he ever fits and speaks well of them

so i.m going aftermarket with my local guy and saving £614

i'll report back on how it goes

« on: July 08, 2015, 07:47:19 PM »
If you're not so keen on dismantling things you can undo the oil filter housing and with it still down in the engine bay swap the filter element over and screw it back on

no need to remove anything :)
